Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865: the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to bring news of emancipation—the last Confederate state where the order had not yet been enforced.

The holiday’s roots run especially deep in Georgia. This was plantation country, home to a Gullah Geechee coastal culture that endures to this day and a civil rights movement that changed the nation.

This year, events across the state from Savannah’s riverfront to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains are marking June 19 with parades, festivals, live music, art, food, and remembrance. Here’s where to find them.
