And just like that, the kids are back in school, and Tybee Island is a little quieter than normal. Head down to the beach for the day and enjoy Tybee Restaurant Week (well, actually two weeks) running through Aug. 17.

What restaurants are participating in Tybee Restaurant Week

Head over to Nickie’s 1971 Bar & Grill on Butler Avenue for a $45 three-course prix-fixe menu with entrée choices of crab leg dinner; 12oz ribeye steak dinner; grouper dinner; and a fried shrimp, Boom Boom shrimp, and grouper dinner; or upgrade to the Nickie’s 1971 Surf and Turf.

Even the Sugar Shack has got in on the act by offering a free ice-cream topping (choose from their enticing list of 14) if you say the words, “I love Tybee Island!”

Check out the complete list of participating restaurants at the Tybee Restaurant Week website.

Bandana Burger coming to Whitemarsh Island

For an eclectic choice of burgers, wings, fires, breakfast bagels, and more, head over to Bandana Burger in Habersham Village – which, amazingly, is open 20 hours a day!

Owner William LaFlower, who originally came to Savannah with Chipotle Mexican Grill and later worked for the Five Guys chain, had the unique branding idea of merging merchandise and burgers: every burger is wrapped in a different bandana, with special bandanas celebrating special holidays.

LaFlower recently announced the opening of his second location on Whitemarsh Island in the former Five Guys location. Stay tuned for the opening date.

Pauline’s Po’Boys opens Aug. 11 on Abercorn

Craving some New Orleans cuisine? Pauline’s Po’Boys at Abercorn and 33rd Street opens Aug. 11. The casual restaurant will feature such Cajun favorites as authentic po’boys (of course), fresh seafood, and hearty sandwiches with bold Louisiana flavors.

To whet the neighborhood’s appetite, Pauline’s recently offered free gumbo samples, and word on the street is that they were delicious! Follow their story on Instagram @paulinespoboys and at the website.

Goodfortune Market home to Savannah’s Community Fridge

Finally, let’s support a dining project organized by Goodfortune Market, 2413 Waters Avenue, two blocks north of Victory Drive. The corner food market, which offers decadent bagel sandwiches and coffees, is now home to Savannah’s first street-legal refrigerator, the Community Fridge.

The local bodega worked with the City to ensure compliance with health standards and the fridge is now officially deemed a food resource location to redistribute food and mitigate food waste. Anyone can donate and anyone can receive. It’s open 24/7 for community members to take what they need or leave what they can.

Goodfortune explains that it’s for “older folks waiting between checks, young people in college on student loans, children who are home for the summer, unhoused people, migrant people, working people…imagine what a difference it could make for a family to have an extra meal or two they don’t have to worry about.”

Goodfortune Market has launched a Go Fund Me campaign to make sure the Community Fridge is continuously stocked; contribute via the link on the Instagram page @communityfridgestagram.
