Democratic gubernatorial nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms is putting Republican opponent Rick Jackson’s abortion stance front and center in a new campaign ad, zeroing in on a recording in which Jackson appeared to agree with a voter who said women seeking a rape exception should have to “prove” they were raped. Jackson also said a pregnancy resulting from rape is “still a life.” Georgia’s six-week abortion law currently allows an exception for rape or incest up to 20 weeks, but only when an official police report has been filed. Jackson’s campaign disputes the way his recorded remarks have been characterized and says he supports the law as it stands, including its existing rape and incest exceptions.
