A labor and delivery unit in Lavonia closed. This is what happened.


In October, the labor and delivery unit at St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia, Georgia closed—in part due to Medicaid cuts from President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Now, women are driving more than an hour for their prenatal care and deliveries. A former nurse in the delivery unit explains what the impact on pregnant women—herself included—has been.
