How do I register to vote in Georgia?

You have three options: online, by mail, or in person. Most people register online at Vote.org. It takes only a few minutes.

If you’d prefer to register in person, visit your County Board of Registrar’s Office. Or, the next time you go to the DDS, you can register right there at the counter. In fact, Georgia automatically registers eligible voters when they get or renew a driver’s license, unless you opt out.

The most important thing to know: Georgia does not allow same-day voter registration. You must be registered by the 5th Monday before Election Day, which is typically about a month out.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive a precinct card in the mail within 3–4 weeks confirming where to vote. But don’t rely solely on that card. Voter rolls are regularly updated, and even if you’ve voted recently, it’s worth logging into your Georgia My Voter Page to confirm you’re still active and that your address is current. Your polling location is listed there as well.

If you move, you need to update your registration at your new address before the next election.

What ID do you need to vote in Georgia?

A photo ID is required to vote in Georgia, but there are lots of options. Acceptable forms include:

  • A Georgia driver’s license. But a useful detail: an expired Georgia’s drivers license  is still valid for voting purposes, as long as it was issued by the Georgia Department of Driver Services
  • A Georgia state ID card
  • A student ID from a Georgia public college, university, or technical college
  • A U.S. passport
  • A U.S. military photo ID
  • An employee photo ID from any U.S. or Georgia government entity. For example, if you work at the CDC
  • A valid tribal photo ID

If you don’t have a qualifying ID, you can get a free Georgia Voter ID Card at any county registrar’s office or Department of Driver Services location.

How, when, and where to vote in Georgia

There are three options for voting in Georgia.

Option 1: Vote in person on Election Day. Go to the polling location listed on your precinct card or look it up at the Georgia My Voter Page. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Bring a valid photo ID. If you’re in line before 7 p.m., you are entitled to vote even if it takes time to get to the front.

Option 2: Vote early. This is often the easiest option. Georgia typically offers early voting on weekdays from 9am-5 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am-4pm, with some counties also offering Sunday hours.

Option 3: Vote absentee by mail. Any registered Georgia voter can request an absentee ballot, no reason or excuse needed. You can apply online at the Georgia My Voter Page, or submit a request in person to your county board of registrars. Requests are accepted between 78 days and 11 days before Election Day.

Once you receive your ballot, you can return it by mail, drop it at an early voting site, or use a drop box at the Board of Registrars office. Just make sure your completed ballot is received by 7 p.m. on Election Day. And remember: postmarked is not enough. If you’re mailing it, build in plenty of extra time.
